# File history and recovery

Open a file, then choose **History**. The timeline shows retained versions and who or what produced each one. Open an older version to read it; **Changes** compares it with the preceding retained version when one is available.

Editors and admins can restore a retained version. Restoration creates a new current version, so the intervening history remains available. Check the preview and confirmation carefully before restoring.

History may be unavailable for content that is too large or whose prior bytes were not retained. The interface states that limitation instead of presenting an empty comparison.

Use the [audit log](https://atmina.ai/docs/audit-and-privacy) when you need the wider record around a change.
